Senate Moves To End Military Support For Saudi Arabia In Yemen War

The Senate overwhelmingly voted Wednesday to advance a resolution that seeks to end U.S. military support for a Saudi Arabia-led coalition fighting in Yemen.

Every Democratic senator, as well as 14 Republicans, voted to move along the bipartisan resolution hours after a closed-door meeting with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.

The resolution's Senate support was a reversal of sorts, as the Senate rejected the same resolution earlier this year. The resolution, which is sponsored by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Utah Sen. Mike Lee, seeks to end U.S. involvement in the war in Yemen, including military assistance.

The resolution now has to pass another round of votes in the Senate before it can formally be up for debate, which is expected to take place next week. If it passes, it will go to the House, which analysts say is unlikely to pass.
