A new report from a Florida crime lab shows DNA samples taken from Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston now connect him to the woman accusing him of sexual assault.
The report says police obtained a sexual assault kit on Dec. 7, 2012, when the alleged assault was said to have happened, and shows the semen found in the woman's underwear matches Winston's DNA.
CBS Sports reports: "The results ... show a one-in-2.2 trillion chance that the DNA obtained from the kit belongs to someone other than Winston."
However, a match does not indicate a crime was committed. It only proves that Winston had close contact with the accuser the night the attack allegedly happened.
According to police documents, a woman accused Winston of assaulting her in an off-campus apartment after she left a bar in December of 2012, but she never pressed charges. (Via Sports Illustrated)
On Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Times obtained a statement from the accuser's attorney claiming Florida detective Scott Angulo told her client:
"Tallahassee [is] a big football town and the victim needs to think long and hard before proceeding against [Winston] because she will be raked over the coals and her life will be made miserable."
Winston has yet to be questioned by Tallahassee police or the state attorney investigating the case, but voluntarily submitted his DNA to authorities through a buccal swab.
The charges could have major implications for Winston on the field. His second-ranked Florida State Seminoles are currently undefeated and poised for a national championship berth. Winston is also one of the front-runners for the coveted Heisman Trophy. (Via ESPN)
Charges have yet to be brought against Winston, but the case remains open. Florida State says his status with the team has not changed, and he is expected start in this weekend's showdown against Idaho.
