It's possible President Donald Trump will be interviewed by special counsel Robert Mueller as part of the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

According to a report from NBC, the president's legal team is conducting preliminary talks with federal investigators about how a possible interview might take place.

Sources told the outlet Trump's team is "seeking potential compromises that could avoid an interview altogether."

But experts say they believe Mueller will want to conduct the interview face-to-face.

As former U.S. Solicitor General Ken Starr told CNN: "[Mueller] needs to, in order to round out, complete his investigation, to come to a decision. He needs to look the President in the eye and ask him the appropriate questions."

A spokesperson for the special counsel's office refused to comment.
