Briana KoenemanNot long after Democrats won back control of the House of Representatives, President Donald Trump made a surprising endorsement for the next House speaker — Nancy Pelosi.
Trump said in a tweet Wednesday morning Pelosi "deserves" to be chosen by Democrats to become the next speaker, adding: "If they give her a hard time, perhaps we will add some Republican votes. She has earned this great honor!"
Pelosi is widely expected to be tapped as speaker again in January. She was first elected to the position in 2007 and served until 2011.
But some Democrats have said they won't support Pelosi. And it's unlikely that any Republicans will vote for her, considering many of them — including Trump — blasted her on the campaign trail.
According to Pelosi's chief of staff, Trump also called her Tuesday night to congratulate her on winning the House.
