In the meantime, Trump said Robert Wilkie will serve as acting secretary. Wilkie is currently under secretary of defense for personnel and readiness.
Trump said he was thankful for Shulkin's service, despite long-standing rumors the president was dissatisfied with Shulkin's public tensions with his own staff, alleged ethics violations and conversations with the media.
