The order also encourages programs without work requirements to consider adding them.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday strengthening work requirements for certain welfare programs.

The order said, "The federal government should do everything within its authority to empower individuals by providing opportunities for work."

Many of these programs, like food stamps, already have work requirements, but Trump wants to strengthen them and make sure they're enforced. He also recommended programs without work requirements consider adding them.

The left-leaning Center on Budget and Policy Priorities says evidence shows changes like the ones Trump ordered "have few long-term positive effects on employment" and could "result in families losing help they need to afford the basics."

Programs that might be affected, including Medicaid, food stamps, housing assistance and cash welfare, have 90 days to submit their recommended changes.
