President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order that would end the birthright citizenship of children born to undocumented immigrants and non-citizens. 

That's according to an interview Trump did with "Axios on HBO" — a four-part documentary series premiering on HBO Sunday. Axios released a clip of the interview on Tuesday.

"You can definitely do it with an act of Congress, but now they're saying I can do it just with an executive order," Trump told "Axios on HBO." "Now how ridiculous, we're the only country in the world where a person comes in, has a baby and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States for 85 years with all of those benefits. It's ridiculous. It's ridiculous. And it has to end."

But what he said about the U.S. being the only country with birthright citizenship isn't true. Several other countries have birthright citizenship policies. Canada is just one example.

It's unclear when Trump would sign the executive order. In the Axios clip, Trump didn't give any details but said it's in the works. 

If the president did sign such an order, he would most likely face legal challenges regarding the 14th Amendment. It says: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside." 

Axios reports that not many immigration and constitutional scholars say Trump has the power to strip that right.

But some conservatives reportedly argue that the 14th Amendment was only meant to provide U.S. citizenship to children of lawful permanent residents of the U.S.
