The U.S. will deploy a battery of defense missiles and a warship to the Middle East to guard against potential attacks from Iran or its proxies.

The decision came after the U.S. military's Central Command warned that Iran was mobilizing proxy groups to attack American forces in Iraq and Syria.

The move comes less than a year after four other missile systems were removed from the region.

But there might be more deployments in the future. Two officials told the New York Times that larger deployments are being planned in case of a military conflict with Iran.

And the Times reports that Iran may be trying to provoke an overreaction from the U.S. The country likely doesn't want a war, but a military strike could be useful to Iranian strategy.
