Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren is forming an exploratory committee — which is the first major step toward launching a 2020 presidential campaign.
Warren made the announcement in a YouTube video and an email to her supporters on Monday. She’s one of the first well-known Democrats to take formal steps toward running for president in the next election.
"If we organize together, if we fight together, if we persist together, we can win. We can, and we will," Warren said.
So what even is an exploratory committee? It's a group that figures out if a political figure can or should run for an elected position. For example, in Washington, D.C., exploratory committees can travel and make phone calls on behalf of the potential candidate and conduct polls, among other things.
Once she’s established that committee, Warren can start raising money for her expected campaign.
