Authorities announced Friday that 27-year-old Mohammed Whitaker has been charged with 18 felony counts stemming from 9 incidents. Whitaker is the sole suspect in a series of highway shootings which left 3 people wounded, and terrified Kansas City drivers for almost a month. (Via KSHB)

Police took Whitaker into custody at his home in Grandview, Mo. Thursday night. Neighbors told the media Whitaker mostly kept to himself, and would come and go at odd hours of the night. (Via  KSNW)

The Kansas City Star reports Whitaker was working at a medical supply company in Overland Park after he dropped out of a technical college. Whitaker's father told the Star, "To my knowledge, he’s never fired a gun. ... I'm totally shocked by all this."

In Friday's press conference, Kansas City mayor Sly James credited the thorough investigation by local and federal authorities, along with the support of the community, for Whitaker's arrest. "This case is a prime example of the positive results that come from a community joining forces against crime." (Via KSHB)

And several Kansas City drivers told KCTV they were relieved to hear a suspect has been arrested for the series of shootings.

"I think I can breathe a little bit easier. ... We've tried to avoid the triangle, it's been actually really nerve-wracking."

"I feel better now."

Authorities are still investigating a potential motive behind the shootings. Prosecutors said Friday Whitaker could face more charges in the future.
