Two people are dead and another injured after a car speeding down the Ohio Turnpike at more than 125 miles per hour with police on its tail smashed into a minivan Thursday night.

Two state troopers reportedly spotted the car separately before the crash occurred, but neither of them were able to keep up with it long enough to stop the driver. (Via WBFF)

According to police, the speeding car hit at least three other vehicles over the course of 17 miles before rear-ending the van. Both vehicles were up in flames by the time officials arrived on the scene. (Via WTVG)

The driver of the car has been identified as 24-year-old Andrew Gans. He was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. But the unidentified people in the van weren't so lucky.

A witness told the Toledo Blade"He could have hit anybody along this way. ... You're driving along the turnpike, minding your own business, and then you're dead. It's hard for me to comprehend. These people were minding their own business."

Officials say they are withholding the names of the two victims until their identities are confirmed and their families are notified.

Investigators on the scene said the fire caused so much damage to the van, they couldn't identify the people inside or tell if they were wearing their seatbelts. (Via WTOL)

It's unclear why Gans was driving so erratically when the accident occurred. Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
