Four people are dead and two more seriously injured after police say a woman opened fire at an American Indian tribal headquarters in northern California Thursday.
Alturas' police chief told local station KRCR that 44-year-old Sherrie Rhoades was taken into custody for the shooting.
"We've had a huge cooperation from the Sheriff's department and the California Highway Patrol and everybody's working together, and we're trying to get this thing resolved as quickly as possible." (Via WXIX)
According to police, Rhoades was attending a tribal eviction meeting at the Cedarville Rancheria tribal office Thursday afternoon when she opened fire. (Via KHSL)
And when she ran out of ammunition for her weapon, she reportedly stabbed another person with a butcher knife.
Officers say they were alerted to the attack when a witness was able to escape from the building and run to the Alturas police station to get help. (Via KFSN)
When police arrived on the scene, they say they found Rhoades running outside the building with a knife in her hands and arrested her immediately.
KRCR reports the deceased victims have been identified as a 19-year-old woman, a 30-year-old man, a 45-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man.
According to CNN, the two wounded victims were airlifted to out-of-area hospitals and are both currently in critical condition.
Police haven't officially announced a motive. But several media outlets are reporting Rhoades, who was a former tribal leader, was at the hearing to face her own eviction from the Rancheria.
