At least three people are dead and more than 100 are injured after an Amtrak train derailed on a bridge over a major highway in Washington state.

Police said 13 train cars came off the tracks and fell onto the interstate Monday morning. Rescue crews were able to reach all of the cars by Monday evening, though most were too unsafe to search earlier in the day.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Office said today was the first day of public use of the tracks after weeks of inspections and testing.

Amtrak President Richard Anderson told reporters the technology that automatically slows the train when it's going too fast was not activated before the train derailed.
