A bachelor party trip from Minnesota to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby barely got out the gate this week as a group of guys discovered a dead body in their rented RV.
Dan Trainor, the groom, and his friends started on their way to Kentucky Thursday. KSTP reports they stopped at a retail store in Winona to drop off their cars and load their things when they smelled something coming from a compartment within the RV.
"I opened it up and I see two legs and they're bruised, or decomposing, or whatever. ... My mouth dropped and I was like, 'That's a dead body.'" (Via KMSP)
According to The Star Tribune, that body has been identified as 22-year-old Kevin Casserly of Anoka. The paper reports Casserly, a father, was reported missing Nov. 17 — six days after telling his mother he called in sick to work.
Organizers of a Facebook page dedicated to helping find Casserly posted a message about the positive ID saying, "To all the volunteers who helped us search for Kevin, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Words cannot express how much the support has meant to all of us and Kevin's family."
Trainor and his friends told reporters in Minnesota they rented the RV from a friend of a friend.
Police aren't saying who the owner is, but WCCO reports the bachelor party got a eerie warning from him before starting their trip.
Trainor: "He did mention not to open that hatch."
There's no word yet on the cause of Casserly's death and his body was taken to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester for an autopsy. WCCO also reports authorities plan to keep the bachelor party's belongings in the RV until the autopsy is completed.
