The man accused of killing two black people in a Kroger grocery store in Kentucky last month is now facing hate crime charges.
A federal grand jury filed the six count indictment Thursday. It charges Gregory Bush with two counts of hate crime resulting in death and one count of hate crime with an attempt to kill, among other charges.
The indictment says the suspect shot the two people because of their "actual and perceived race and color."
The suspect wasn't previously charged with a hate crime because Kentucky's hate crimes statute is limited — it covers crimes such as assault, arson and rape, but not homicide.
In October, the suspect was charged with two counts of murder, one count of criminal attempted murder and two counts of wanton endangerment. He's scheduled to appear in court Jan. 15.
