Hi, I'm Johannah Grenaway and here's a look at the stories Newsy is watching now.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel entered quarantine Sunday after her doctor tested positive for the coronavirus. The doctor had vaccinated her for pneumonia on Friday. Merkel will work from home and be tested for the virus "in the coming days." Germany has the fifth most confirmed cases of any country. The German chancellor was informed that her doctor had the virus just after she announced a new ban on meetings of more than two people.
And U.S. Sen. Rand Paul has also tested positive for the coronavirus. He made the announcement on Twitter Sunday, noting that he hasn't experienced symptoms and wasn't aware of direct contact with an infected person. Paul said he took the test out of an "abundance of caution due to his extensive travel and events." Earlier this month, Paul was the only senator to vote against an $8.3 billion emergency spending measure to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
New York will start building temporary hospitals immediately to combat the rapid spread of the coronavirus. Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the call Sunday, also pushing for the federal government to speed up production of medical equipment. This comes just days after FEMA declared the state a major disaster area. New York has over 12,000 confirmed cases of the virus — more than all but seven countries. Seventy-six New Yorkers have died.
