Four teenagers were arrested and charged in connection to a deadly mass shooting in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

Two 16-year-olds, a 17-year-old and Jeremiah Upson, 18, were charged early Wednesday morning with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and unlawful assembly.

"One of the 16-year-old suspects is currently at a local hospital suffering from a gunshot wound," Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office spokesperson said in a press release. "Two of the suspects are Spotsylvania County residents, and two are Caroline County residents. Three of the suspects have been incarcerated with no bond. The suspect, who is currently in a local hospital, will be incarcerated upon his discharge."

The deceased include:

  • Chase Feaster, 18, of Spotsylvania County
  • Alonzo Goffney, 18, of Spotsylvania County
  • A 20-year-old man whose name is being withheld pending confirmation of the Medical Examiner’s Office

Investigators said the initial investigation revealed the motive for the shooting was "an illegal gun sale/robbery."
"All suspects are in custody and there is no threat to public safety," the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office posted on social media Wednesday morning.

At about 5:30 p.m., 911 calls came in about a shooting at a townhouse complex in Spotsylvania County, just outside Fredericksburg, said Maj. Elizabeth Scott, spokesperson for the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office.

Officials urged people to avoid the area and told those near the scene to stay indoors while authorities investigated, she said.

All of the victims were found outside, according to Scott.

Authorities also asked for any witnesses to send any video that could help the investigation.

Fredericksburg City Public Schools announced on its website that schools would start two hours late Wednesday “in light of the profound impact this incident has had on members of our school community.”

“This delay will allow us the necessary time to prepare our buildings and staff to welcome students with the care and support they may need during this difficult time,” the statement said.

The district did not give further details.
