Prior to news of Golubski's death, his attorney was at the federal courthouse in Topeka, where the trial was supposed to begin. However, he told the judge, “I don’t have a client, your honor.”

The attorney told the judge that he spoke with Golubski Monday morning and that his client was “despondent” about media coverage of the trial.

The judge issued the arrest warrant for Golubski. Police officers were seen surrounding Golubski's home in Edwardsville, where he apparently took his own life.

The Associated Press reports that the judge dismissed the case against Golubski at prosecutors’ request, calling the death “truly unexpected.”
