Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords has some big plans to mark the anniversary of the Tucson, Ariz., shooting that seriously injured her three years ago.
"Today, Gabby Giffords is going to do something that is incredibly courageous and inspiring and a little bit surprising — she's going to sky-dive here in Arizona to commemorate the three-year anniversary." (Via NBC)
Savannah Guthrie announced on the "Today" show Giffords will jump out of a plane with a Navy SEAL Wednesday to commemorate the shooting. (Via CNN)
The former congresswoman was meeting with constituents outside a supermarket in Tucson for her "Congress on Your Corner" event when a gunman opened fire into the crowd. Six people were killed, and 12 others were injured, including Giffords, who was shot in the head. (Via The Christian Science Monitor)
Since then, Giffords says she's been fighting to get her life back to normal.
She resigned from Congress in 2012 to focus on her recovery, and she's made huge progress, even though many once thought she might never walk or talk again after the attack. (Via ABC)
But Giffords told The New York Times that she's still working on her therapy. "Many may look at me and see mostly what I have lost. I struggle to speak, my eyesight's not great, my right arm and leg are paralyzed, and I left a job I loved representing southern Arizona in Congress."
Giffords says she hopes sky-diving will show how much progress she's made since the shooting. The footage of her jump is scheduled to air on the "Today" show Thursday.
