A 14-year-old Chicago-area girl has been charged with murder after police say she stabbed her 11-year-old half-sister to death.

Mundelein police say they found the 11-year-old in her home, unconscious and brutally stabbed more than 30 times, when they responded to a 911 call early Tuesday morning. (Via WBFF)

The Chicago Tribune reports the 14-year-old had told emergency dispatchers that an intruder broke into the house, attacked her half-sister, then ran out.

Authorities immediately placed several schools in the area on lockdown. But WMAQ reports once officers started questioning the teen, they figured out the truth about what really happened.

"The teen set her alarm early, grabbed a knife from the kitchen, and then went inside the victim's bedroom and repeatedly stabbed the sleeping girl. The older sister said the younger sister didn't appreciate her housework." (Via WMAQ)

According to CNN, police say the 14-year-old then took a shower to wash off the blood, came up with the story about the intruder and called 911.

Neighbors say the girls were close and were often seen playing together outside their Mundelein home.

"They would always be together. You know, the older one would be taking care of the little one, and vice versa." (Via WLS-TV)

The 14-year-old was arrested and charged with murder. The case is juvenile court for now, but the Lake County State Attorney's Office says it could be moved to an adult court in the future.
