Police in Virginia announced Wednesday evening the suspect in the case of missing University of Virginia student Hannah Graham has been arrested.
Charlottesville police said during a brief press conference the suspect, 32-year-old Jesse Matthew, was found and taken into custody in Galveston, Texas — roughly 1,300 miles from Charlottesville.
Police said Tuesday that Matthew is being charged with abduction with intent to defile, which implies sexual assault.
Police didn't elaborate what sort of evidence was found in Matthew's car or apartment, either, but one legal expert suggests:
"It could be something as simple as some of her clothing left at that apartment."
Matthew was last seen speeding away from police after voluntarily meeting with them and his attorney Saturday.
Graham, 18, disappeared Sept. 13. Police say they believe Matthew was the last person to see Graham that night.
Authorities declined to comment on the details surrounding Matthew’s arrest — like why he was in Galveston or whether he surrendered — but they did say the search for Graham is ongoing. They’ve offered a $100,000 reward for information about her whereabouts.
