Thousands of airport workers in the New York City area are about to get a pay raise.

On Thursday, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey approved increasing the minimum wage for all airport workers to $19 an hour.

The change applies to employees at Newark, LaGuardia and JFK, and it will happen incrementally over the next five years.

According to The New York Times, $19 per hour will be the highest minimum wage for any public agency across the country.

Officials said they hope this reduces employee turnover and therefore improves safety at each airport. The first raise will go into effect on Nov. 1 this year.
