“What if I told you that we could reduce food waste and feed thousands of hungry people — all with a few simple taps on your smartphone," Komal Ahmad asked.

That was Komal Ahmad — founder and CEO of Feeding Forward, an app that makes it easier for event planners and businesses to donate their leftover food to shelters and food banks.

Here’s how it works. If you have leftover food, you fill out an online form, and then a driver picks it up and distributes it to those in need.

So far, the app is available only in the San Francisco Bay Area, where it’s already redistributed about 690,000 pounds of food.

But a recent story in CNET brought some welcome publicity.

And now, Ahmad tells the New York Daily News, she’s heard from thousands of people asking for the company to expand elsewhere.

“To me, food is a fundamental human right. And it’s baffling that in such a wealthy and prosperous nation, so many people end up begging for it,” Ahmad said.

The Environmental Protection Agency says about 50 million Americans don’t have access to enough food. About 15 percent of U.S. households don’t know where their next meal will come from. (Video via Environmental Protection Agency)
