President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he's grounding all Boeing 737 MAX 8 and MAX 9 planes in the U.S.

"Planes in the air, if they are the 737 MAX, will be grounded upon landing at the destination. Pilots have been notified, airlines have been all notified. Airlines are agreeing with us. The safety of the American people and all people is our paramount concern," President Trump said.

His order comes just one day after the FAA's acting administrator said that so far, its review of the planes "shows no systemic performance issues and provides no basis to order grounding the aircraft."

Aviation experts, lawmakers and other critics were calling on the FAA to ground the planes while concerns about safety are addressed.

Dozens of countries around the world banned the use of the aircraft not long after Ethiopia Airlines Flight 302 crashed en route to Nairobi, Kenya, killing all 157 people on board. It was the second fatal accident involving that Boeing model in less than five months.

The FAA previously said it will order Boeing to make some "design changes" to the Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircrafts, including to its anti-stalling software and maneuvering system updates.
