Immigrants rights attorneys are suing the Trump administration, alleging that migrant children are being kept "dirty, cold, hungry and sleep-deprived" in unsanitary detention facilities.
In a suit filed Wednesday, lawyers are seeking a court order to impose immediate improvements to ensure "safe and sanitary conditions" for children detained at Customs and Border Protection centers in Texas’ El Paso and Rio Grande Valley sectors.
The suit, filed against Attorney General William Barr, seeks to allow medical and public health professionals immediate access to the facilities. It also asks a judge to hold the Trump administration in contempt, asserting that conditions at the centers violate a 1997 court agreement that set treatment standards for minors in federal custody.
The suit comes on the heels of The Associated Press report, which said lawyers who recently visited a Border station in Clint, Texas found hundreds of migrant children held without adequate food, water and sanitation for up to 27 days.
