First lady Melania Trump planned to speak with local officials and border patrol agents.

First lady Melania Trump made a visit to Tucson, Arizona, on Thursday to see firsthand the conditions in an immigrant holding facility and speak to local officials.

Tucson is just two hours away from the southern border, which has been a focus for the Trump administration. Its "zero-tolerance" policy led to family separations and sparked intense criticism.

The first lady's press secretary Stephanie Grisham says the goal of the trip is to continue encouraging family reunification and immigration reform.

While she was there, Melania Trump planned to take part in a roundtable discussion with border patrol agents, U.S. marshals and local ranchers.

This is her second trip near the border in recent days. She visited Texas last week for an impromptu visit to a child detention center.
