Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said the U.S. doesn't have plans to cancel future joint military exercises with South Korea.

Mattis made the announcement Tuesday at the Pentagon.

President Donald Trump suspended joint drills in June following his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. But relations between Trump and Kim have soured since the summit. Trump announced Friday that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo would cancel his upcoming trip to North Korea.

The U.S.-South Korea drills have been an issue in denuclearization talks with North Korea. When he suspended the drills, Trump called them costly and "provocative." That echoed earlier statements by the Kim regime, which sees the drills as preparations for an invasion and a threat to its sovereignty.
