Special counsel Robert Mueller asked the FBI to investigate an alleged sexual misconduct scheme against him.
Earlier in October, multiple journalists were contacted by an individual who reportedly claimed they'd been offered money in exchange for accusing Mueller of sexual misconduct.
This unnamed person, who said they worked at the same law firm as Mueller back in 1974, alleged the man who made the offer was an intermediary for conservative radio host Jack Burkman.
Burkman tweeted earlier this week that he'd be revealing more information on the alleged sexual misconduct claims on Thursday.
But after digging into the individual and confirming with the law firm that there was no record the unnamed person had ever worked there, a journalist for the Hill Reporter said he and others independently determined "that this was likely a hoax of some sort."
Mueller's spokesman confirmed the FBI was immediately notified after the office "learned last week of allegations that women were offered money to make false claims about the special counsel."
Reuters reached out to the FBI, but it declined to comment on the special counsel's request.
