The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office has just released a report summarizing its eight-month investigation into the 2014 Isla Vista mass killing.
On May 23, 22-year-old Elliot Rodger stabbed his three roommates to death before embarking on a violent rampage, which left three more people dead and fourteen injured. Rodger eventually crashed his car and committed suicide.
The sheriff's office says this report represents the end of the investigation; Rodger was concluded to have acted alone in the incident. The report includes a detailed breakdown of the killings and what the subsequent police investigation turned up. (Video via ABC)
Those findings include Rodger's twisted Internet search history, which includes Nazis and torture devices. It also lists how Rodger planned his rampage for over a year, spending almost $2,500 on guns and ammunition from different gun shops between December 2012 and March 2013.
The report also notes how Rodger was able to evade both California's strict gun laws and its mental health statutes. Sheriff Bill Brown told KEYT he hopes the report spurs some legislative changes.
The sheriff said, "We're hopeful that we can take lessons learned from this tragedy and help shape some policy and help shape some training."
The shooting has already sparked new gun restrictions in California, including the nation's first law allowing family members to request a judge's permission to confiscate firearms from an individual who poses a threat.
