More than two years after Massachusetts voted to legalize marijuana, recreational pot sales are finally kicking off in the state.

On Tuesday morning, two medical marijuana dispensaries in Leicester and Northampton started selling recreational weed to customers over the age of 21.

The stores' first recreational pot sales were to Northampton's mayor and an Iraq War veteran. And there were plenty of other customers waiting to make purchases of their own.

Massachusetts voters gave medical marijuana the green light in 2012, and they decided to legalize recreational weed in 2016.

Recreational marijuana sales are legal in just a handful of other states — Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, California and Nevada. Maine is expected to be added to that list next year.
