An English teacher from Texas is this year's National Teacher of the Year.

"Even Texas, 330,000 teachers in Texas. And to be Texas Teacher of the Year is incredible. But National Teacher of the Year? That's 3.2 million teachers," Shanna Peeples said

The group that gives out this honor, the Council of Chief State School Officers, wrote on its website that Shanna Peeples works with many students who are refugees, so English is their second language.

Palo Duro High School, where Peeples teaches, is a Title 1 school, which means it has a large population of students who come from low-income households.

"Knowing what they've come from makes me understand that I don't make promises easily or that I'm very aware of what they're coming from, so I try to honor my word," Peeples told CBS.

Peeples, who has been a teacher for the past 12 years, will be honored by President Obama on Wednesday. She will spend the next year speaking around the world as an advocate for teachers.
