Top 3 Commencement Speeches

Newsy's top three college commencement speeches of 2014.
Posted

The end of May is nearing and that means graduation season. If you've never sat through a graduation ceremony, honestly they're pretty boring. But we've decided to narrow down some of the most enlightening, entertaining and out-of-the-norm college commencement speakers of 2014.

First up, Mr. Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs made his way to Howard University, where he attended school for two years before dropping out, but he spread a little life advice to the grads. I don't know about you, but I couldn't be paid to miss a speech from the business mogul. (Via Wikimedia Commons / Richard Burdett

"I had to find my inner power. Now, I'm not going to lie to you, there's gonna be a lot of times y'all about to fail ... But in that moment I want you to remember the power of you ... Do you know how powerful you are?" (Via Howard University

Whoa, that gave me chills and apparently others too. Although there were critics, Uproxxsays he "gave one hell" of a speech and Complex says he "proved critics wrong."

During the ceremony he was given an honorary doctorate degree. Next up, a speech to the University of Connecticut that was out of this world — literally. It's at our number two spot.

"That same work ethic and perseverance that got you to this point can take you a long way. ... I started out in the same place as you. Now, I've launched three times on the space shuttle, I helped build the International Space Station." (Via UConn

"So that is Rick Mastracchio. He is a NASA astronaut. He is at the International Space Station giving the commencement address from 260 miles above Earth."  (Via NBC)

And numero uno — what's a better way to end your college career than catching a pass from Peyton Manning? Speaking to the University of Virginia, where his wife attended school, Manning gave a few graduating seniors a reason to be nervous. (Via Flickr / Mike Morbeck

"One regret that I've always had here is that I never got to throw any football passes here on this lawn. So if you will indulge me, I'm going to fulfill that dream right now." (Via University of Virginia

He made note of just how easy he went on those impromptu receivers — especially in comparison to his Saturday Night Live skit in 2007.

"Open, get open. Get your head out of your a**. You suck." (Via NBC / "Saturday Night Live")

Thank goodness there were no injuries this time around. That's it for us, thanks for watching our top three commencement speeches.
