China is likely to do away with presidential term limits soon, and President Donald Trump suggested he'd like to see something similar here in the U.S., according to audio obtained by CNN.
"He's now president for life. President for life. ... I think it's great. Maybe we'll have to give that a shot someday," Trump said at a fundraising lunch on Saturday.
Trump does have a history of admiring political strongmen, including Chinese President Xi Jinping. He's praised Russia's Vladimir Putin, talked about his "great friendship" with Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan and said Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was doing an "unbelievable job on the drug problem."
But Saturday's comment was likely meant to be exactly how it seems to have been perceived: as a joke.
