The sister of the men accused in the deadliest domestic terrorist act since 9/11 is now accused of threatening to bomb a New York woman.
Ailina Tsarnaev faces a charge of domestic harassment after New York City Police say she called the mother of her boyfriend's children earlier this week. An NYPD lieutenant says Tsarnaev told the woman, "I know people who can go over there and put a bomb on you.”
WABC in New York reports Tsarnaev who's in her 20s turned herself in at a police precinct in Harlem and was released pending her next court appearance.
Tsarnaev's brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan were the subjects of an intense manhunt that virtually shut down the city of Boston in April 2013 after bombings at the Boston Marathon killed three and injured more than 200. (Video via The Boston Globe)
Dzhokhar now faces 30 federal charges that could ultimately result in the death penalty if convicted. Tamerlan died in a chase and shootout with police a few days after the bombings.
This is not Ailina's first run-in with law enforcement, though widespread coverage of the incidents is certainly the result of the bombings her brothers are accused of.
She appeared in court last year when police said she wouldn't cooperate in an investigation into fake bills passed along at a restaurant. The short court appearance was heavily covered by The Boston Globe and other media.
And much of the file video now being shown for this case is of that 2013 court appearance or shortly after the bombings when police went to question her. (Video via WNBC)
A months-long investigative piece published by The Boston Globe late last year described a dysfunctional Tsarnaev family with Tamerlan possibly suffering from schizophrenia and influencing younger brother Dzhokhar. That piece said some family members called Ailina the "wild child."
The NYPD detective who described the charges said Ailina Tsarnaev is expected back in court next month.
