Wedding showers? Sure! Honeymoons? OK! Divorce celebrations? That's a new one.
"I'm an independent woman," Leona Metcalf told WAGA.
"The cans, the sparkles, the getaway car, a familiar ritual of the newlywed, but the newly divorced?" the WAGA reporter said.
"To me it's a celebration because, hey, it should have been over five years ago," Metcalf said.
Leona Metcalf told WAGA her husband walked out on her five years ago, but she just now got her divorce finalized — and it seems she's ready to party.
Or, as The New York Times said, "paint the town red with her divorce" papers.
She told us on Facebook she thought it was just a "cute little idea" and thought it would make people in her hometown of Lawrenceville, Georgia, laugh. She said:
"I never in a million years thought it would go this far. ... What people don't realize is I'm also celebrating that I'm very proud of myself for getting out of a very bad marriage."
She told us she typed up her own divorce papers. She ended up having to run it in the newspaper for 60 days because she didn't know where her husband was.
Metcalf finally got her court date, and the court finalized her divorce June 11.
She has also been celebrating on her Facebook wall, writing: "This is so crazy!!! All over a cute idea I thought up to put on my truck to celebrate... Lol. Who would have known."
