A woman is scheduled to appear in federal court Thursday after she was arrested for climbing onto the base of the Statue of Liberty.

The woman remained on the statue's base for several hours Wednesday afternoon before police officers were able to get her down and take her into custody. The National Park Service was forced to evacuate everyone from the area as a precaution.

Officials said the woman was protesting the Trump administration's immigration policies.

Earlier in the day, she was part of a group protest calling for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to be abolished. The group later said her climb was not a planned part of their demonstration.

Local media report the woman was charged with trespassing, disorderly conduct and interference with national park regulations.
