At least three people are dead following a winter storm that pummeled the southeast over the weekend.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper confirmed the death toll in a statement on Monday. He said one person died after a tree fell on their vehicle while they were driving, another from a heart-related condition while on the way to a shelter and a woman on an oxygen generator died when her power went out.

Some parts of North Carolina saw up to 20 inches of snow, and South Carolina reportedly saw more snow in one day than it usually does in a year. Richmond, Virginia, got around 11 inches, which is reportedly the most it's gotten in more than 100 years.

More than 300,000 customers lost power across six states because of the winter storm, with the majority of those outages in North Carolina. As of Tuesday morning, thousands of people in the state are still without power

Cooper warned residents to be careful going forward, as low temperatures will likely refreeze any melting snow. He also reiterated that the state of emergency in North Carolina is still in effect.
