Levees along the Mississippi and Arkansas rivers have failed as historic flooding continues across several states.

Authorities issued evacuation orders for residents in West Quincy, Missouri, Thursday evening after a levee breach on the Durgens Creek, which flows into the Mississippi River.

And on Friday morning, the Dardanelle Levee along the Arkansas River failed, sending water gushing into a rural area in western Arkansas. Officials had predicted the breach and urged residents to leave the day before.

Weeks of heavy rainfall in the Midwest have caused both rivers to rise to record-breaking levels in some areas. Officials are trying to control the rising floodwaters. But with more rain and flood warnings in the forecast, it could be a while before the rivers return to their normal levels.
