Super Typhoon Yutu devastated the U.S. territory of the Northern Mariana Islands.

The storm hit the remote island communities of Saipan and Tinian Wednesday night with winds as strong as a category 5 hurricane and dangerous storm surges of five to seven feet. As CNN points out, it's one of the strongest storms to ever hit a U.S. territory.

The mayor of Tinian says his community has been devastated by Yutu.

"Many homes have been destroyed, our critical infrastructure has been compromised. We currently have no power and water at this time," said San Nicolas.

Super Typhoon Yutu is forecast to remain a strong storm but is expected to weaken slightly throughout the weekend. It's now working its way through the Philippine Sea and is heading toward the Philippines and Taiwan.
