At least one person is dead after a strong earthquake rocked the western coastline of Central America Monday night.
The U.S. Geological Survey says a 7.3-magnitude quake struck about 40 miles off the west coast of Nicaragua and about 55 miles south of El Salvador. Some aftershocks were reported in surrounding countries. (Video via CBS)
San Miguel Mayor Will Salgado posted this video on his Twitter account which appears to show the earthquake shaking structures, buildings and setting off car alarms. He also said one man was killed in San Miguel when a utility pole fell on him.
Salgado said many structures were damaged as the shocks rattled the city. Power also went out after the quake hit but was restored to nearly everyone in the city shortly after.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had issued a "tsunami warning" for Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador but later revised that to a less-severe "tsunami alert," saying the threat had "mostly passed."
