Former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf won the prestigious Ibrahim Prize.

Sirleaf accepted the award and the US$5 million that came with it on Friday. She's the first woman to win the prize and says she'll use it to establish a center for the empowerment of women.

That $5 million is paid out to winners over 10 years, and they receive $200,000 every year for life after that.

In her speech, Sirleaf said she hoped women across Africa will "break through barriers" and "push back the frontiers of possibilities."

The Ibrahim Prize committee recognized her important role in Liberia's recovery after years of civil war.
