Chinese President Xi Jinping is making several stops during his trip to Africa to shore up China as the continent's go-to economic and diplomatic partner.

Xi will stop in Senegal and Rwanda before heading to the 10th annual BRICS summit in South Africa. He'll then visit the small island nation of Mauritius on his way home.

China is Africa's No. 1 trading partner, surpassing the U.S. years ago. The country also established its first overseas military base in Africa last year.
