Zimbabwe's Constitutional Court Upholds Presidential Election Results

Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa accused the July 30 vote of being "fraudulent and illegal."

Zimbabwe's constitutional court upheld Emmerson Mnangagwa's election as president, rejecting a challenge by the opposition candidate.

Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa called the July 30 vote "fraudulent and illegal." But the court's nine judges ruled unanimously that Chamisa hadn't provided sufficient evidence to prove his case.

Mnangagwa tweeted that his "door is open and my arms are outstretched" for Chamisa and called for "peace and unity above all."

Chamisa's party tweeted it would respect the court's decision but would "doggedly pursue all constitutionally permissible avenues." It also accused the court of endorsing a "sham" election and said the judges "had no interest in affording" Chamisa a fair trial.
