Almost 90 people have been injured after protests turned violent in parts of Spain Sunday.

Demonstrators were protesting the arrest of former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont.

Puigdemont was taken into police custody Sunday in Germany on an international arrest warrant. If he is extradited back to Spain, he could face up to 45 years in prison for rebellion and sedition.

The Washington Post reports Sunday's demonstrations were aimed at the European Union and Germany, with participants chanting phrases like, "This Europe is shameful!"
