The driver of a passenger train that derailed in Taiwan Sunday is being investigated for negligence.
Investigators uncovered the train was traveling at almost twice the speed limit around a curve when all eight of its carriages flew off the tracks.
The train's driver told a courtTuesday that he'd manually disabled its speed-control system prior to the derailment after the train had slowed down earlier in the day. He reportedly didn't turn the system back on later because he was focused on fixing a separate issue with the train.
Eighteen passengers died and more than 170 others were injured in the incident. Sunday's derailment is Taiwan's deadliest rail accident in decades.
