At least 17 people are dead after a fire broke out in a New Delhi hotel early Tuesday local time.

There were reportedly more than 50 people staying at the Hotel Arpit Palace when the fire started. Dozens of them were rescued by fire crews.

Authorities are looking into the hotel's circuitry as part of their investigation into the cause of the blaze.

Buildings in India aren't usually well-maintained or built to code.

In this case, a government official told reporters that the six-story hotel had been built with two more floors than its permit allowed for. The building was also lacking proper fire escapes and emergency exits

The Delhi Police have reportedly registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in connection with the fire. The government announced it plans to compensate the victims' families.
