China's ambassador to the U.S. says his country won't hesitate to strike back if the U.S. slaps more tariffs on Chinese imports.

"We will certainly take countermeasures of the same proportion and of the same scale, same intensity," China's Ambassador to the U.S. Cui Tiankai said.

The ambassador made those comments during an interview with Chinese state-run TV station CGTN on Tuesday, not long after China announced new tariffs on dozens of American goods.

He added those measures were a direct response to President Donald Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminum from China and other countries.

Last month, Trump also announced plans to impose tariffs on billions of dollars worth of Chinese imports spanning dozens of categories.

China previously warned it would retaliate if the U.S. decided to go through with its tariff plans.
