Angela Merkel has been elected for a fourth term as German chancellor.

The country's parliament voted 364 to 315 to re-elect Merkel in a secret ballot Wednesday, and she was sworn in later that day.

Germany had been in political turmoil for nearly six months after millions of voters abandoned the country's two main parties during the general election. That significantly complicated the task of forming another governing coalition.

The deadlock was the longest Germany has seen since World War II.
