Tessa Jowell, the U.K.'s former culture secretary, has died at the age of 70.

According to a statement from her family, Jowell died peacefully at her family's home Saturday evening.

Jowell was diagnosed with brain cancer last year. But she stayed a member of the House of Lords and used her diagnosis to campaign for better treatment and access to care.

During a speech to the House of Lords in January, Jowell said: "I hope that this debate will give hope to other cancer patients, like me, so we can live well together with cancer, not just dying of it. All of us, for longer."

When Jowell was culture secretary, she helped secure the 2012 Olympics for London.

She is survived by her husband and children.
