Google Loses Key 'Right To Be Forgotten' Case In The UK

Google will have to delete search results about a man's previous criminal conviction.

Google has lost a landmark "right to be forgotten" case in the U.K.

A judge there ruled the company had to remove search results about a businessman's past criminal conviction. The judge said the information was outdated and of no public interest.

Back in 2014, the European court of justice ruled "irrelevant" data should be erased on request. Google and other companies are allowed to reject requests, but they have to weigh public interest against an individual's right to privacy.

The judge denied another man's suit to make Google remove results about his past criminal conviction. The difference? One man showed remorse; the other didn't.
